'Photograph' review: Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s mesmerising performance will keep you hooked

The film is not a perfect shot; however, it is cleverly composed and open to interpretation.

'Photograph' narrates the story of Rafiq (Siddiqui), a struggling street photographer in Mumbai, and Miloni (Malhotra), a reclusive youngster. When these two completely different personalities cross paths, their lives get intertwined, leading to a compelling tale.

When Rafiq convinces Miloni to pose for him outside Gateway of India, the two develop a bond. Pressured by his grandmother to get married, Rafiq coaxes Miloni to pose as his fiancée and meet his grandmother. Keeping the religious, societal and academical differences aside, the two eventually discover that they have a lot in common.

As the director attempts his unique take on love, the audience needs to keep their patience. The pace of the film is slow, and it may not appeal to people who are used to fast-paced romantic movies. Batra establishes this subtle romance with a lot of restrain — the characters exchange glances and peacefully coexist around each other. The essence of Mumbai is beautifully woven into the narrative and stands out.

While the film struggles to keep you engaged, Siddiqui’s mesmerising performance will keep you hooked. He conveys the unsaid emotions effortlessly and is truly the master of his craft. Malhotra leaves a mark and does justice to her introverted character. This photograph is not a perfect shot; however, it is cleverly composed and is open to interpretation.
